The 28-year-old kicked off the show with a medley of some of her biggest hits, including "We Found Love." Check out a clip from her high-energy performance below.
RiRi, who is accepting the coveted Vanguard Award, returned later in the show to perform two more hits from her storied career: 2009's "Rude Boy" and her 2016 smash "Work."
For the third of her four sets, the Barbadian star toned things down with a performances of "Pour It Up" and "Needed Me."
Just prior to receiving her big award (presented to her by Drake, natch), Rihanna hit the stage one last time to show just how deep her well of hits is, cycling through a medley of "Stay," "Diamonds," and "Must Be Love On the Brain" in her most powerful performance of the night.
Performing her new hit "Side to Side," the 23-year-old worked up a sweat on an exercise bike before being joined on stage by Nicki Minaj to really heat things up!
The 32-year-old rapper (and Ciara's ex) went with an expletive-filled track for his set, and definitely made sure the MTV censors earned their paychecks!
Music's most controversial figure was given four minutes to do whatever he wanted, and spent his time talking about Taylor Swift, violence, and his idols, before introducing the video for his new song "Fade" — starring a nearly-nude Teyana Taylor.
Anyone want some bacon? The former Disney star, 23, sure did, as he took to the streets of New York to perform his new single with guest Ty Dolla $ign.
In perhaps the performance of the night, the show's leader in nominations didn't disappoint, giving a stirring rendition of several of her Lemonade hits, covering "Pray You Catch Me," "Hold Up," "Don’t Hurt Yourself," "Sorry," and "Formation."
In what was perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night, the 34-year-old pop diva returned to the VMAs stage for the first time in a decade. The singer stuck mostly to her more recent work, performing "Make Me" and "Me, Myself, and I" — the latter with an assist from G-Eazy.
"Closer" is the number one song in the country, so it's no wonder the group performed it with special guest Halsey.
