ABC Head Honcho Hints at Black Bachelor, “Diverse” Bachelorette
With The Bachelor now in its 20th season, fans and critics alike have been wondering, “Where’s a black Bachelor contestant?” for a while. Well, it sounds like ABC is finally taking note.
The net’s entertainment chief Paul Lee hinted we may be getting an African-American suitor sooner than we think.
“We’re doing a whole lot of tweaks,” the exec told EW after they asked what’s taking so long on the black prince charming front. “We have The Farm Team, right? Which allows us to pick the next one.”
The “Farm Team” refers to the pool of possible contestants the Bachelor Nation production team has been choosing from since 2009. So it sounds like the group of maybe-bachelors may be filled with more than a few handsome black men.
While Paul wasn’t willing to make any promises on that front, he did make a huge declaration for sister show, The Bachelorette.
“I’d be very surprised if The Bachelorette in the summer wasn’t diverse,” he promised. “Perhaps I shouldn’t have said that, but I think that’s likely to happen.”
So if America manages to fall in love with one of Season 12’s black would-be Romeos — who just happens to fall short of scoring the final rose — we might just be set for a historic Bachelor run within the year.
