Meet the First Black Bachelor: See the Guy Cast on ‘UnREAL’
We’ve still got some time before we see an African-American guy get cast as Bachelor — though there is some good news on the Bachelorette front! — but we’ve got something that’ll hold you over in the meantime.
The amazing folks over at Lifetime’s UnREAL are blessing us with a black Bachelor — or as they call it on the scripted series, “suitor” — and now he’s officially been cast. Ladies and gents, meet B.J. Britt!
OK, so you might know the hunky actor already from his roles on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Being Mary Jane, but he’s sure to make an even greater impression as he dates 20-something women (albeit, made up women) on national TV.
The cable network is adding B.J. for Season 2 of the breakout series, according to TVLine, where he will play handsome pro quarterback (a la Jesse Palmer) Darius Hill.
Even more meta? Darius is the fictional show Everlasting’s first black lead! Subtle, right? Apparently, Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and Rachel (Shiri Appleby) snag a major coup by casting the athlete, who is working to overcome a PR scandal.
And lest you think it’s just a coincidence Lifetime is beating ABC to the chase with this role, the show’s producers maintained that was their intent.
“There are few things more pressing than this conversation,” co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro said. “We don’t want to fall asleep at the wheel.”
UnREAL Season 2 premieres later this year on Lifetime.
