The Walking Dead’s Carl Grimes lost his innocence, his eye, and even his mother.

But his portrayer Chandler Riggs was prepared to lose a whole lot more.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has stated that the scene in which Negan threatens a desperate Rick, pressuring him to cut off Carl’s arm, was the most difficult scene he ever had to shoot.

But it could have been so much worse…

While some fans thought Carl losing an arm could have been a replacement for comic book Rick’s missing hand, executive producer Gale Ann Hurd pointed out the entire purpose of the scene was simply to fill Rick with fear.

While reading the script, Chandler himself was convinced his character was going to lose his arm for real, according to ComicBook.com.

"I had no idea it wasn't going to happen," the teen said. "When I was reading the script, I was like 'are they seriously going to cut my arm off?' I was scared to death.’”

We would be too!

Carl isn’t out of the woods yet, though.

Creator Robert Kirkman has gone on the record saying the young Grimes could still adopt his father’s limbless storyline in the long run....

“There were a lot of variations that were discussed, and we're not ruling it out for the future.”

And this is why we can’t have nice things.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
