The Rock, Bruno Mars, and 11 Other Racially Ambiguous Celebrities (PHOTOS)
Though Hollywood may have its problems when it comes to diversity in casting (and Oscar nominations), it definitely doesn’t have a shortage of actors with diverse backgrounds. In fact, there are even a few celebrities who tend to stump fans when it comes to their lineage.
While we are not one to define a person by their ethnicity, we have to admit there are those who make it pretty hard to guess their genealogical makeup.
Well, we’ve compiled a list of some of Hollywood’s most racially ambiguous stars and (thanks to a little sleuthing on Wikipedia) found their multicultural backgrounds:
Smallville’s Canadian actress was born to an Indonesian Chinese mother (who has roots in Jamaica!) and a father of Dutch descent.
The British R&B singer was born in Yugoslavia to Albanian parents.
The controversial clothing designer (and ex wife to Dame Dash) was born to a Dutch mother and a Bengali Indian father from Chennai.
The Hawaiian soul singer who had us catching “Grenades” is actually of Filipino, Puerto Rican, Hungarian, and Ukrainian descent.
He also gets bonus points for having a parent from New York.
The Alabama-born star has always been a bit of a tricky one for some fans, but in recent years the former stripper has revealed his ties to the Cajun people of New Orleans — and has even developed an accent (which he hopes to share in his upcoming Marvel flick)!
Supermodel (and now super mom) has been well-renowned for her beautiful, exotic looks which are all thanks to her Norwegian and Thai parentage.
For the duration of Mariah’s career, her lineage has always stumped fans, however, the “Butterflies” crooner has made it well known she’s the product of an Irish mom and Afro-Venezuelan father.
The X-Men Apocalypse actress may be playing Japanese-British mutant Betsy “Psylocke” Braddock in her first ever Marvel film, but the former G4 girl geek is actually of Vietnamese and European descent.
Famed daughter of music legend Quincy Jones and actress Peggy Lipton is proud to be of Russian, Irish, and African American descent — and even called out a reporter for calling her ethnic exterior a “tan.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
The wrestler-turned-actor is pretty well known for his Polynesian look, however, while his mother is of Samoan descent, his father is a Black Nova Scotian making him also part Canadian!
While the handsome Game of Thrones star usually portrays Native Americans in films and TV shows, his background is made of Native Hawaiian, Native American, German, and Irish.
The ballerina-turned-actress has been known for her chameleon-like appeal, but when it comes down to it, the mother of two is of Afro-Latino descent born to parents from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The Matrix star definitely has a lot more going for him than meets the eye. Despite being born in Lebanon, the actor is of English, Native Hawaiian, and Chinese ancestry.
The world is a beautiful multi-racial place and the celebs above are living proof of it.
