Original story (12/12/2016 at 4:22 p.m. ET):

One of HGTV’s most beloved couples could be building towards divorce after a strange altercation.

Flip or Flop’s Christina and Tarek El Moussa have announced their separation, following a police incident that involved a suicide report, an AR-15, and a helicopter.

Orange County law enforcement descended upon the El Moussa residency in May 2016 after receiving "a call [about] a possibly suicidal male with a gun," TMZ reports.

The response was massive and supposedly included 11 deputies and aerial support from a police chopper.

Considering the chaos cops found, their reaction was apparently warranted.

Tarek grabbed a gun from his safe, ran out of his property through the El Moussa's back door, and escaped down a hiking trail, eyewitnesses told police.

Christina was then spotted fleeing the home, “shaking and crying.”

When helicopters caught up with Tarek he tried to explain away the entire scary scene.

The HGTV star told officers he had no plans to harm himself and had instead wanted to "blow off some steam."

The father of two said he only brought the gun along for mountain lions and rattlesnakes.

Still, that didn't stop cops from searching Tarek's residency for guns — and finding a shocking number of them.

When police returned to the El Moussa household they reportedly confiscated five weapons, including an AR-15.

Now, seven months later, the reality TV couple is still dealing with the fallout from the incident.

“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” they tell People, labeling the police intervention “an abundance of caution.”

Christina and Tarek reveal they tried to “sort out” their marriage with counseling, but decided separation was the best option while assessing “the future of [their] marriage.”

“During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be.”
