Gina Rodriguez Is Blessed to Have Thryoid Disorder
Gina Rodriguez believes being diagnosed with the thyroid disorder known as Hashimoto’s disease was a "blessing."
The Jane The Virgin star has been very open about her battle and is thankful to “represent [other] women who are dealing with the disease.”
Symptoms of the disorder include weight gain and fatigue, which has driven the actress to a new passion off-camera: boxing.
"I obviously like to box, and I grew up in a boxing family, but I didn't know [director] Peter [Berg] was so into boxing.”
And apparently the men of hollywood don’t take it easy on their female opponent.
"I ended up boxing every day. Mark Wahlberg would come when he could. Peter [Berg] and I would box each other in the ring. He's cracked me across the face, and I've cracked him across the face. It's really not as painful as you would think. We don't break that easily," she told Health magazine.
At age 32 the actress has a significantly different perspective of the disorder than she did in her teenage years.
The “battle with weight” felt like a “curse when I was 19,” but now it represents something bigger than her own personal battle.
As an actress I would say, “Seriously? In a world that's so vain, I have to deal with the disease that makes you not keep weight off?”
Now there’s only one true challenge of battling the disease.
“I'm gluten-free, which is the most difficult thing in the world because, like Oprah, I love bread!," Gina exclaimed.
Here’s to hoping we see the starlet’s boxing skills on the big screen!
