Sara Ramirez Plans to “Jump Back In” — Is Callie Returning to ‘Grey’s’?

First she burned up our screens in Mary Lambert’s new music video, and now she’s talking about resuming her acting career and potentially teasing a return to Grey’s Anatomy?

What did we Sara Ramirez fans do to get so lucky this month?

First, a little context: The 41-year-old — who left Grey’s at the end of Season 12 — was an honoree at an LGBT Heritage Month event at Los Angeles City Hall.

“With our current political climate it’s hard to maintain hope these days,” she said in her speech.

“But sharing space in a way that celebrates my community and all its intersections gives me hope.”

“I’m proud to be a Mexican Irish-American, immigrant, queer, and bisexual woman,” Sara continued.

“The LGBTQ+ community has never been about just one person, and one experience and identity. Our struggles are shared and our resilience unrelenting.”

Talking to LA This Week at the event, Sara said it will be interesting to see how her career unfolds now.

“I wasn’t out publicly on television when I was playing Callie,” she said.

“So, you know, there were people behind the scenes, close friends of mine who knew about me personally, but it’s another thing to play a character on television. So I’m gonna have to let you know how it goes when I jump back in.”

When she “jumps back in,” eh? That means she intends on acting again… but does it mean she’d return to the role that made her a household name?

When Sara announced her exit from Grey’s Anatomy last year, she said that she’d be “taking some welcome time off” but that she and Shonda Rhimes would “definitely continue” their conversations.

Around that time, Shonda told Periscope followers she had always imagined a happy ending for Callie and Arizona, and she still hopes that ship is endgame.

“My heart is as broken as yours about Calzona, and I’m not even kidding about this,” she said.

“I had always planned the storyline that ended with them getting back together and maybe that could still happen in the future, I don’t know.

“My fingers are crossed but for right now, Sara is taking a break, and I’m pretty proud of her for deciding to do so. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Four months later, though, Sara said her departure was the best choice she ever made, so your guess is as good as ours.

Plus, she has been frustrated with her old network recently — calling out a bi joke in one ABC show and apparent bi erasure in another.

Still, so long as former Grey Sloan employees are alive, there’s always hope they’ll come back. We wouldn’t be surprised at all if we saw Callie darken the hospital doors again… and maybe even Cristina!
