Grey’s Anatomy’s Shonda Rhimes on Callie’s Exit: “I Had a Different Plan”

If that ending for Callie Torres in the Grey's Anatomy Season 12 finale felt abrupt (and disrespectful), don’t blame Shonda Rhimes and the other writers.

At the Vulture Festival in New York City on May 22, the über-producer revealed that wasn’t supposed to be Callie’s final scene.

In fact. she didn’t know Sara Ramirez was leaving the long-running ABC drama until the finale was already filmed.

“I found out maybe three days before you guys found out,” Shonda said, per The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s not the first time a major character has left, but it was a unique situation, as Shonda explained.

“This one was interesting. It was different because it wasn’t a big, planned thing,” the 46-year-old said. “I had a different plan going, and when Sara came and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was sort of lucky that we had shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”

She continued: “I felt really good that we had shot that ending and that she said she wanted to take this break and we were able to give it to her because I love the woman and I want to do everything for her. It all worked out in that sense.”

In a Periscope video Shonda streamed from the festival, she revealed she always wanted Callie and Arizona to reunite.

“My heart is as broken as yours about Calzona, and I’m not even kidding about this. I had always planned the storyline that ended with them getting back together and maybe that could still happen in the future, I don’t know.”

Apparently, the door is open for Sara Ramirez’s return to the show, if the actress should decide to come back.

“My fingers are crossed but for right now, Sara is taking a break and I’m pretty proud of her for deciding to do so. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”

At the panel, Shonda talked about the show’s notable departures, particularly that of Cristina portrayer Sandra Oh.

“You never want to see anybody go — you want them to be there forever … The idea that Sandra did it for 10 seasons and then was ready to go was amazing. I kept waiting. Season 6, Season 7, Season 8, I was like, ‘Sandra, are you good?’

“Because I know what that is for an actor. You grow and change and then you itch for something new … You have to be really respectful of that.”

But there’s one actress whose departure Shonda Rhimes would not write past: Ellen Pompeo. “Our pact is that we will go together. When she goes, I go.”
