22 ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Characters’ First (and Last) Words
These days, we never know which characters we meet on Grey's Anatomy will be staples of the show for years and years… just like how we sometimes don’t know when we’re saying goodbye.
Here are the first and last words uttered by the Seattle surgeons — the current cast and some fan favorites from yesteryear — showing how character introductions and farewells can be meaningful or seemingly trivial!
First words [finding Mer’s bra after their one-night-stand]: “This is… uh…”
Last words [in a voicemail to Meredith]: “I love you. I love our family. And we’re gonna keep doing this. I’ll see you when I get home. I love you.”
First words [finishing Der’s above thought]: “Humiliating, on so many levels.”
First words [to the interns]: “Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game.”
First words [talking to Meredith about the female interns]: “Yeah. I hear one of them is a model. Seriously. That’s gonna help with the respect thing?”
Last words [to Shane at her new job in Switzerland]: “Let’s do it.”
First words [to Meredith and Cristina] “You got the Nazi? So did I. At least we’ll be tortured together, right?”
Last words [after he told Bailey about taking his army medic job and she started yelling at him]: “Yeah, that’s where I thought we’d start.”
First words [talking about Bailey’s reputation with the other interns]: “Maybe it’s professional jealousy. Maybe she’s brilliant, and they call her Nazi because they’re jealous. Maybe she’s nice.”
Last words [when Mer begs her to stay in Seattle, saying it’s her home]: “No, it’s not. Not anymore. It’s just a place I worked, and I can do that anywhere.”
First words [to the interns]: “I have five rules. Memorize them. Number one: Don’t bother sucking up. I already hate you. That’s not gonna change.”
First words [getting up to speed on a seizure patient]: “What do we have? A wet fish on dry land?”
Last words [offering Cristina the keys to his Switzerland research center]: “This place is yours, Cristina, if you want it. Do you?”
First words [to a nurse]: “4B’s got post-op pneumonia. Let’s start antibiotics.”
First words [looking at a patient’s file over Mer’s shoulder]: “Invasive non-small cell, with a history of COPD? That guy's pretty much a goner, huh?”
Last words [dictating the terms of his living will]: “30 days.”
First words [meeting George and treating his dislocated shoulder]: “George O’Malley?”
Last words [after Arizona relents custody of Sofia]: “Thank you.”
First words [flirting with Derek at the bar]: “Hi.”
Last words [as Mark comforts her as she dies]: “Meant to be.”
First words [introducing herself]: “Dr. Bailey? Arizona Robbins. I’m taking over Dr. Kenley’s patients.”
First words [when Richard asks him if he really did a tracheotomy with a pen]: “So?”
First words [advising Owen on ER organization]: “At Mercy West, we do zones. When it’s super busy, we just give everyone a zone, a space. The nurses put a person in that space, you know it’s your patient. Helps you get to them quicker.”
First words [to Lexie]: “Thanks for being my tour guide through all this first-day madness.
First words [when a patient goes tachycardic]]: “I don’t understand what happened. Everything appears to be in order here.”
First words: “Steph, I need a favor. I’ll do your scut for a week. Two weeks. And before you say no, I just want to say that you look really pretty today., and you’re the most talented intern in our class, and I’m in no way trying to butter you up so you don’t say no.”
First words [in response to Jo]: “No.”
First words [in her job interview for Cristina’s job]: “You think I look too young. I finished high school early. Also med school. Pretty annoying, right?”
First words [arriving in an ambulance]: “Her name is Joan Paulson. She’s 40 weeks pregnant and in active labor. BP’s 100 over 60. She’s been complaining of severe neck pain. And an obvious fracture of her right arm.”
First words [when Cross tells him he can’t park in the ambulance bay]: “Oh, no, I’m not parking. I’m just stopping for a sec.”
