The winter holidays are fast approaching, but we still have several more Thursdays before Grey's Anatomy Season 13 ends its midseason hiatus.

So we’re spending these cold days revisiting our hopes for the ABC hit’s lucky 13th season, and the slideshow above shows what we want for the Grey Sloan surgeons when it resumes.

(Shondaland, please put a check in the mail for this storyline guidance.)

Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 returns on Thursday, January 19, 2017, at 8 p.m ET on ABC.

1. Alex takes the plea deal

We know, we know. That goes against everything Meredith and the fandom want for him. They want him to fight the felony charges.

But here’s the thing: We don’t really see how he has a defense. He did the crime. So we think he should accept the lesser, two-year sentence and then get out early on good behavior.

It could work, too! Either Grey’s would give Justin Chambers a much-deserved vacation during Alex’s imprisonment or the show could just do one of its trademark fast-forwards.

2. Meredith continues to date around

When we left Grey and her Anatomy at the end of Season 12, she was wondering if second great loves even exist… and casually sleeping with Nathan in the meantime.

We’re hopeless romantics, so we hope Mer not only decides a second great love is possible but finds him (or her) in Season 13.

But we’ve also enjoyed seeing her have so much no-strings-attached fun, so she should ride that horse — so to speak — as long as she wants. Nathan has his own brand of dreaminess, but we wanna see her explore even more options.

Mer’s half-sister, meanwhile, is still unaware he and Meredith have been making sexy house calls.

But homegirl could really use a win, so we hope Nathan eventually develops feelings for Maggie, ushering in the age of Naggie. (We’re still working on a couple name.)

4. Amelia and Owen reconcile

Amelia chose flight over fight amid relationship roadblocks — and not for the first time, mind you — but we ship her and Owen too hard to want to see them with anyone else, assuming Cristina really isn’t coming back.

Amelia doesn’t want kids, but unlike Cristina, it seems more “not now” than “not ever.” She and Owen can still make it work!

5. Jackson and April stay on good terms if not reunite

MerDer is done, Crowen is over, Calzona is kaput… will any couple on Grey’s Anatomy hang on to their happily-ever-after?

Even Japril called it quits in Season 12, but these particular exes have rebounded from their rough patch (read: restraining order) and have been surprised to discover how well they can co-parent.

Grey’s fans could use proof that exes like Jackson and April can still maintain a friendly and productive relationship, even if they don’t reunite romantically.

6. We don’t see Jo’s ex-husband unless it’s in court

With what we’ve heard of Jo’s abusive ex-husband — a man apparently so threatening she doesn’t even think proven-pugilist Alex would beat him in a fight — we dread the prospect of him terrorizing her any more than he does from afar.

If he does show up in Seattle, it better be in handcuffs, so Jo can have her day in (King County) court.

7. Shonda & Co. continue exploring work-life balance

Indeed, one of our favorite aspects of Grey’s Anatomy is how it has explored familial ambition vs. career ambition without passing judgment either way. We hope the writers continue to delve into that balancing act and all its struggles and victories.

8. Stephanie finally gets to be happy

The death of Stephanie’s boo Kyle in Season 12 confirms it: This girl cannot catch a break. And that’s especially hard to watch, because we’ve long believed Stephanie is the voice of reason at Grey Sloan Memorial. We would just like her to find a partner who doesn’t flatline or, you know, leave her for a bride at a wedding.

9. Izzie comes back for closure

Katherine Heigl seems desperate to make nice with Shonda Rhimes and come back to Grey’s Anatomy, if only for a guest appearance. We certainly understand why Shonda may be reluctant, but if she can bring back Isaiah Washington after his offenses, she should be able to bring back Katherine.

Izzie’s years-long romance with Alex needs closure, especially with the still-hanging thread of her fertilized eggs.

Kim Raver hung out with Kevin McKidd not long ago, reminding us of how good their characters were together. We wouldn’t want Teddy to break up Owen and Amelia, but we do miss the platonic bestie-ship these Army buds had in the hospital and in the trenches.

11. We see more of Ben’s sister

Grey’s Anatomy was supposed to launch a “major trans storyline” in Season 11, and the show did introduce Ben’s sister, Rosalind, just as she was starting her physical transition to being female… in a one-episode arc.

We have a hunch that storyline was supposed to be longer but got put on the back burner once the writers had to craft a swift exit for Derek. So we want Grey’s to do better by Ros, especially given the staggering dearth of trans characters on TV.

12. Callie comes back in the season finale

Callie decided to move to New York City with new girlfriend Penny at the end of Season 12 as the latter began a prestigious fellowship. But that fellowship is only a year long, and Callie portrayer Sara Ramirez said she wanted “time off” from Grey’s, so we’re hoping we won’t be without Callie forever.

Maybe a season off will be enough of a battery-recharge for the Tony-winning actress. If so, a sudden reappearance of Callie in Seattle would be a powerful way to end Season 13. Maybe Arizona will have finally found love with Eliza Minnick by that point… just before her ex-wife returns to disrupt it all.

13. No actor leaves abruptly

With Patrick Dempsey’s aforementioned rushed exit in Season 11, and with Sara Ramirez’s surprise decision to leave the series this past season, the writers have had to scramble to script farewells to major characters.

We certainly can’t stop the Grey’s actors from leaving the show — though they’re all staying put for now — but we hope any of the series regulars who opt to leave take a cue from Sandra Oh and announce their departure months (or even a whole season) in advance. The standard two weeks’ notice doesn’t quite fly in the TV biz!
