Ian Somerhalder Talks ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Without Nina Dobrev
The Vampire Diaries has been moving on without Nina Dobrev — beautifully, in our opinion — but how does Ian Somerhalder feel about it?
The 36-year-old actor opened up about having some reservations heading into Season 7 of the hit CW series without his on-screen love and the show’s leading lady.

“I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena [Gilbert] was gone. And I was one of those people,” Ian told Variety.
“I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show,” Ian continued. “By virtue of the fact that it wasn’t a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula.”

But the former Lost actor says he’s “grateful” for all the work the creative team has put into making this season move the narrative of the “teen vampire soap opera” forward without the female lead it began with.
Given all the changes this season — in terms of romantic matches, time jumps, and giant plot twists — we think it’s doing just fine.
The Vampire Diaries Season 7 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
