Ice Cube Responds to ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Oscar Snub (VIDEO)
The NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, became a surprise winner at the box office this past summer and its rave reviews even translated into an Oscars 2016 nomination… but not for the category you’d expect.
The film, which followed the lives of the West Coast gangsta rap group that included Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube, was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for the 88th annual Academy Awards. However, it wasn’t nominated for any other major category, including Best Picture.
Moviegoer and talk show host Wendy Williams was surprised by the snub, and addressed the issue with rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube during his visit to the Wendy Williams Show this week.
In chatting about the nomination and snub, Ice Cube revealed he was expecting more than one nod from the Academy, but he wasn’t surprised the entire cast and crew weren’t acknowledged for their work.
“I’m not pissed, I’m not surprised. It’s the Oscars. They do what they do,” the Ride Along 2 star said. “The people loved the movie, the people supported the movie. No. 1 at the box office, over $200 million worldwide, I can’t be mad.”
Members of the audience seemed to agree with the “F—k the Police” rapper, who also spoke on being inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with his group nearly 30 years after being in the music business.
