John Stamos Spills the Origin of His “Have Mercy” Catchphrase
Full(er) House’s Uncle Jesse will forever be connected to his infamous catchphrase, “Have mercy.”
Now his off-screen counterpart John Stamos has finally revealed where the nearly 30-year-old saying comes from.
We can thank Happy Days creator Garry Marshall for the long-running one-liner.
"He always said, ‘Get a catchphrase, you need a catchphrase.' I'm not kidding you," John explained at the TV Land Icon Awards last weekend while accepting his Timeless Icon statue.
"The 'have mercy' thing came out of, 'Oh s—t, Garry told me I had to have a catchphrase," the handsome 52-year-old continued.
But that little piece of advice wasn’t the only merciful thing Garry, who also has an Icon award, did for the Grandfathered star.
The Hollywood heavyweight also suggested John for the part of Uncle Jesse Katsopolis back in the ‘80s.
When the veteran actor wasn’t giving props to his idol, he was, as usual, cracking jokes.
“You really outdid yourself here,” he declared during his speech. “They know I'm not dying, right? This is like the Bar Mitzvah I never had, hosted by George Lopez."
Never change, John, never change!
The TV Land Icon Awards air tonight, April 17, at 9 p.m. on TV Land.
