Kanye West Sued Over “Bound 2” — But Why?

Kanye West may fancy himself a musical genius, but it doesn’t seem like he or anyone on his team has the same aptitude for navigating the legal system.

Kanye is being sued by former Ponderosa Twins Plus One singer Ricky Spicer for using a sample recorded by the former teen singer in his recent single “Bound 2.”

Ricky, who recorded the high-pitched soul segment in 1971, when he was just 12 years old, claims that he had no idea that his voice would be used on the Yeezus track.

In the suit, which also names Island Def-Jam Music, Roc-A-Fella Records, Rhino Entertainment, and Universal Music Group, Ricky’s lawyer, Vincent Imbesi writes, “Mr. Spicer’s voice is sampled exactly as he recorded it and his voice … is heard several times.”

The lawsuit specifies that Ricky would either like to be compensated for the use of his vocals or have them pulled from the track completely, although the latter seems highly unlikely, considering the popularity of the track for Kanye, and how heavily it relies on Ricky’s work.

Even if Kanye and his label are found to have used the sample without Ricky’s permission, it’s not a clear-cut case by any stretch of the imagination. While Ricky may be the singer on the track, he likely doesn’t own the rights to the sample Kanye used.

Regardless of how the case works out, we’re sure Kanye’s "bound" to have plenty to say about it.
