Katy Perry Slammed For Insensitive Comment About Barack Obama
That's why her latest comment about President Barack Obama has many of her fans both shocked and upset.
During an Instagram live video, the 32-year-old was reading fan comments and questions when one of them struck a nerve.
A commenter had suggested they didn't like Katy's new hairstyle — a blonde buzz cut — and suggested that she go back to her classic black hairstyle.
"Oh, someone says, 'I miss your old black hair.' Oh, really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, OK. Times change, bye. See you guys later," Katy says in the video.
It's hard to determine what exactly she was trying to say with the bizarre joke — probably something along the lines of "you can't always get what you want" — but her supporters didn't take it very well.
Some expressed frustration that the "Roar" singer would compare something as trivial as her hair with something as serious as Donald Trump's presidency, which has a lot of people legitimately scared.
"Wow Katy Perry. The reference to former Pres. Obama was offensive & a poor, tasteless attempt at humor. Your privilege is showing," writes @pariscarerra.
Others interpreted the joke as racist, since her hair used to be black and the president also used to be black — admittedly a bit of a stretch.
"I think she shouldn't have mentioned Obama because it makes it seem like she linking BLACK hair to Barack cuz he black," tweets @KrapmatiK.
Some, however, were not offended by the joke and simply thought others mistook the musician's meaning for something insensitive.
"Katy Perry meant she wants Obama back and can't have him same way ppl want her black hair and won't get it back ... Christ ppl lol," writes @findingwhitney.
Katy herself has not yet responded to the criticism.
