Criminal Minds’ Kirsten Vangsness: Penelope Is “Head Over Heels” For Derek — Exclusive
Derek and Penelope are no more!
Last night’s episode of Criminal Minds titled “A Beautiful Disaster” was a rough one for Derek Morgan and Penelope Garcia shippers, as their 11-season will they/won’t they relationship was cut short with Shemar Moore’s official exit from the show.
But silver lining? It also somewhat confirmed all of our suspicions of underlying feelings between the co-workers-turned-secret-soulmates, thanks to the woman behind Penelope, Kirsten Vangsness!
The actress took her turn in the writers’ room for a second time with the ep, co-writing with showrunner Erica Messer for the third of three episodes surrounding SSA Morgan. And she tells Wetpaint that particular scene (you know which one) was pivotal for Derek and Penelope fans.
“I didn’t know until I was doing this scene that Penelope Garcia has been head-over-heels, totally in love with him and has been just waiting,” she admits. “And she didn’t know! She’d just been a good friend and doing what she does. That realization comes of, ‘Oh my god.’”
Up until that moment, Kirsten was ignoring the online buzz around the pair.
“If someone had asked me last year, ‘Are they in love with each other?’ I would have been like, ‘No, they just have a very unique relationship,’” she explains.
In fact, she reveals the show had originally planned to explore “who the real woman in Derek’s life” was in an earlier episode, but it was later scrapped.
“They chose not to, and that was weird to me,” the actress says. “It’s obvious — even if you don’t write it in there. I don’t know how to play Garcia without Morgan. She doesn’t exist without Morgan.”
Aww! Seriously, how is the show going on without these two together?!
While Derek might be gone, at least we’ll always have the rampant fan fiction about Garcia and Morgan — something Kirsten is full in support of.
“I think it’s great we live in an age where people ship relationships and put them in whatever place they want,” the Kill Me Deadly star states.
Criminal Minds airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
