NeNe Leakes Filed For Bankruptcy, Owes IRS $1M
NeNe Leakes may have been “very rich” with a “Trump check” in the bank at some point, but it looks like those days may be over for the former housewife.
The reality show star reportedly owes Uncle Sam a check to the tune of $1 million.
Recently-surfaced documents indicate NeNe filed for chapter 13 bankruptcy back in 1996 — before her RHOA fame — under her birth name, Linnethia Johnson.
Documents discovered by RadarOnline show Linnethia owed almost $30,000 to creditors, including $2,000 of student loan debt and $27,000 from a 1994 Honda Accord car loan.
One year later, Ms. Johnson became Mrs. Leakes, marrying real estate investor Gregg Leakes in 1997, which relieved much of her financial stress. Though the couple did split back in 2010, they reunited two years later.
More recently, it was revealed the part-time comic owed the state of California $86,624 in back taxes, in addition to owing the Georgia and the U.S. Government more than $900,000.
The Sacramento County clerk’s office claim the former dancer did not pay taxes for 2014, and also confirmed the lien from 2014 is still valid, meaning she has yet to pony up the cash.
NeNe also reportedly turned down a $2.5 million payday from The Real Housewives of Atlanta for Season 9. One can only wonder if she's happy with that decision today.
