Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Did Spencer Join the “A” Team?

Pretty Little Liars fans, are you ready for this news? Spencer (Troian Bellisario) has officially joined the "A" team!

After her mental breakdown on Season 3, Episode 22 (“Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”), things were looking grim for poor Spence. At the end of the episode, Mona had seemingly convinced her to join the “A” team, but we didn't know that for certain until Season 3, Episode 23, when Spencer confirms her "A" team alliance. She even has her own black hoodie! (Hey, after Toby was unmAsked in “The Lady Killer,” anything is possible.)

But perhaps the most shocking revelation is that this means Spencer has betrayed her friends. She even managed to escape Radley (thanks to Mona's map) and kidnap Malcolm before Aria could pick him up from school. That's right. Spencer kidnapped Malcolm and brought him to the carnival. But why? Did she want to scare Aria? Or push her into breaking up with Ezra and therefore, breaking her heart? Whatever the reason, we did not see this ywist coming!

We've speculated in the past about why Spence could possibly be on the "A" team, and Troian Bellisario herself told us that out of any of the Liars, she thinks Spencer is the "most capable" of joining the "A" team (she does have a "sliding scale of morality," after all).

In a recently unveiled spoiler pic from the Season 3 finale, "A dAngerous gAme,” Spencer comes face-to-face with the enigmatic girl in the red coat. Why Spencer? This could be a clue that she’s joined the “A” team. After all, the girl in the red coat is the Big “A,” so she’d likely have to make some sort of introduction to the team’s newest member. But would Spencer really betray her friends like that? Or is she infiltrating the “A” team to finally put an end to “A’s” games?

The double agent theory is a popular one among PLL fans. (As if we really want to believe Toby would betray Spencer out of spite!) It is possible Spencer, having finally been pushed to the brink of sanity, would do anything to take down “A” — even join the team. Maybe she’ll even find out what motivated Toby to join the band of merry lunatics.

What do you think? Do you like the plot twist? Or are you upset Spencer would betray her friends?

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
