Prince died earlier today, April 21, leaving behind a three-decade reign in the spotlight, as well as an extensive and complicated love life with many exes. Some lovers were already famous, some he was making famous… and some even overlapped!

Mayte Garcia

Prince married Mayte, his backup singer and dancer at the time, on Valentine’s Day 1996 and welcomed son Boy Gregory with her eight months later, though Boy died a week after birth. Prince and Mayte divorced in 1999.

Manuela Testolini

This onetime employee at Prince’s charity married the singer in 2001 but filed for divorce in 2006. She later married Eric Benét, ex-husband of Halle Berry, and they have three kids together.

Sheila Escovedo

Prince proposed to his drummer halfway through a performance of “Purple Rain” at a 1987 concert in Europe, as she wrote in her memoir, The Beat of My Own Drum. They kept their relationship under wraps, though, ultimately calling it off around 1990.

Susannah Melvoin

This singer and songwriter was engaged to Prince in the mid-1980s and is reportedly the inspiration for “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the smash hit he wrote for Sinéad O’Connor.


Sherilyn Fenn

This actress, best known for her role in Twin Peaks, dated Prince in the 1980s. She later told The Face magazine he talked her out of seeing a voice coach and losing her unique sound.


A model and actress and the lead singer of Prince’s girl group Vanity 6, he and Denise Katrina Matthews dated from around 1980 to 1983. She died just two months before him.

Jill Jones

Prince dated this backup singer, the inspiration for his song “She’s Always in My Hair,” after he joined him on tour around 1982.

Susan Moonsie

According to Prince biographer Per Nilsen, Prince’s song “When Doves Cry” was inspired by his tenuous relationship in the early 1980s with this Vanity 6 singer.

Apollonia Kotero

Vanity had a falling out with Prince in 1983, and this actress and model filled both her Purple Rain role and her lead singer position in Vanity 6. After Prince changed her name from Patricia to Apollonia, he then renamed the group Apollonia 6… and dated her!


Madge dated the musician in 1985 and dueted with him on her 1988 track “Love Song.” The two pop stars feuded for years after that, only reconciling in 2011.

Devin DeVasquez

Prince dated this Playboy centerfold in the mid-1980s as well.

Kim Basinger

This L.A. Confidential Oscar winner dated Prince in the late 1980s, around the time he provided the soundtrack to 1989’s Batman, in which she stars.

“He’s a brilliant talent,” Kim later told The Daily Beast. “There’s no doubt about that. You know that, I’m sure. Hey, listen, I don’t really have boundaries, so I enjoyed that time of my life.”

Carmen Electra

She plays coy about their reported romance, but the model born Tara Leigh Patrick did get the name Carmen Electra from Prince when he signed her to his record label around 1991.

Bria Valente

Yet another protégé of Prince’s, this singer became his girlfriend around 2007, two years before she released her debut album, Elixer, as part of a three-album set with his LOtUSFLOW3R and MPLSoUND. He even got her to become a fellow Jehovah’s Witness.
