9 Things We Learned From Robert Kirkman’s Reddit AMA

The Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman hosted a Reddit AMA earlier this week in honor of his new Cinemax show, Outcast, premiering next month, but TWD was never far from his mind.

We’ve know RK said TWD protagonist Rick Grimes would die eventually, but, being the wealth of information he is, there were at least nine other useful tidbits we gleaned from Robert’s Q&A that will be of special interest to Walking Dead fans.

Scott Gimple Really Does Care About the Fans

Given Glenn Rhee’s fake-out death and the Season 6 finale cliffhanger, many TWD fans accused showrunner Scott Gimple of not caring about them or their feelings, but Robert insists the opposite is true.

“Scott Gimple is a great guy who EVERY FAN would love if they could get to know him. And he LOSES SLEEP trying to make the fan base happy. It may not seem that way, but it is,” Robert told one disgruntled watcher. “He loves the comic as much as the die hard fans of the comics do, he was a die hard fan of the comic before the show existed.”

Robert Existed in the TWD Universe

The Walking Dead universe is loaded with colorful characters, and for a while, Robert was among them.

When a fan asked if Carl Grimes’s old Science Dog shirt meant Robert existed in that world, he answered, “For a little while I did... but I died very quickly.”

There’s a Reason Several TWD Characters Have No Last Name

When one fan asked if the comic book creator would ever reveal the last name of Outcast’s Reverend Anderson, the answer was an emphatic yes. But the same doesn’t apply for the many TWD characters — Michonne, Andrea, etc. — who are known only by their first name.

“I don't like giving people last names on Walking Dead,” the Kentucky native explained.

The prolific writer confirmed he knows how TWD will end, but insisted said ending isn’t in the immediate future.

“YES, but y'know... it's not happening for a long, LOOOOOONG time,” he revealed.

He Doesn’t Have a Favorite TWD Character

While fans of the comics and the AMC drama clearly have their favorite characters, the man who created them all doesn’t prefer any one over the rest.

“I don't play favorites. They all die eventually,” he said, echoing the idea Rick will bite the dust sooner or later.

We’ve never had the urge to know what Andrew Lincoln smells like, but apparently this query was “very important” to one fan, and RK provided a hilarious (and hopefully accurate) answer.

Said the 37-year-old, “He smells like everything you want out of life... which for me is pumpkin pie. He's a human being that smells like pumpkin pie. He's not safe around me.”

Rick Will Beat Himself Up

Though we don’t yet know who Negan killed in the Season 6 ender, no matter who dies the loss will be particularly tough on Rick.

“The premiere episode of Season 7 is going to be hard on everyone... Rick especially,” Robert explained.

He Has No Regrets

With beloved characters dying left and right on TWD you’d think Robert might regret something, but that’s just not the case.

As he sees it, “I don't regret any deaths but I do miss Tyreese... and Axel... and Ezekiel... and... y'know... a lot of them.”

“I wish I'd done ANYTHING with Carol as cool as what we've done in the show,” he added.

Negan Killed Carl

When asked to post a spoiler, Robert had the perfect answer. We’ll just let it speak for itself.

“I really don't like to spoil things at random on things like that,” he said. “Negan killed Carl?”

Thanks for the info, Robert!

The Walking Dead Season 7 will premiere in the fall on AMC.
