Ryan Seacrest Calls Carrie Underwood a “Superstar,” Dissing Kelly Clarkson

Ryan Seacrest has watched every contestant of American Idol come and go over the last 13 years, so he’s a bit of an expert on them.

So when asked on Today who was the reality show’s biggest success story he answered Carrie Underwood without a second thought, throwing winner Kelly Clarkson, 33, under the bus.

Maybe his comments wouldn’t have been so bad if the 41-year-old host didn’t specifically say the “Stronger” singer wasn’t the best.

After naming Carrie as No. 1, anchor Natalie Morales asked if maybe Kelly, who’s won three Grammy awards, also qualified.

“Kelly too, but, you know, I was just on New Year’s with Carrie, and she’s just a superstar,” he declared. “She really is. So I take Carrie.”

But Ryan didn’t just take the morning show interview as an opportunity to diss Kelly. He also told viewers what to expect from AI’s final season.

“We’ll be focusing on the competition, but also on nostalgia,” he promised. All the series’ past hosts were invited back and former winners are expected to pop up as well.

We wonder if “Miss Independent” will even want to show up anymore.

American Idol returns tonight, January 6, at 8 p.m.
