Sam Smith Quits Twitter Amid Oscar Acceptance Speech Backlash
After winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song on February 28 alongside co-writer Jimmy Napes, Sam Smith is facing a helluva Oscar hangover.
In fact, the 23-year-old Brit has quit Twitter amidst an uproar of backlash regarding his acceptance speech.
I'm logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order.— Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) March 1, 2016
In case you didn’t watch the star-studded show — and it seems like a lot of you didn’t — Sam said in his acceptance speech he thought no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar.
He attributed that statistic to Ian McKellen, who later clarified he said no gay actor had ever won, which seems to be true.
Dustin Lance Black, who won Best Original Screenplay at the 2009 Oscars for Milk and who happens to be gay, immediately called him out and even joked about how Sam should know better considering Sam texts Dustin’s fiancé, Olympic diver Tom Daley.
Sam, however, does rightly point out that being first was never his point.
My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly.— Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) February 29, 2016
But that backlash isn’t Sam’s only bad memory from this year’s ceremony. He also told reporters his performance was the “worst moment” of his life, per BBC News — saying, “Singing was horrible. I hated every minute.”
