Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Nina Dobrev Leaving After Season 6

Sad news to report, Vampire Diaries fans: Nina Dobrev has confirmed that she will indeed be leaving the CW series at the end of Season 6. The announcement comes mere hours after the 26-year-old actress posted a slew of photos from her lakeside adventures this past Easter weekend with her TVD family — including co-creator Julie Plec and stars Zach Roerig (Matt), Michael Trevino (Tyler), Matt Davis (Alaric), and Michael Malarkey (Enzo), Kat Graham (Bonnie), and others — that definitely gave off major nostalgic vibes.

While these photos left fans questioning Nina’s future on the show, the former Degrassi star took to her Instagram to break the news herself that Season 6 would be her last. Check out her full statement and brace yourself for feels:

Dearest TVD Family, I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. There's more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you'll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert's life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her - and to my work family - as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show.' 😉 I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't. Love, Nina

Dry your tears and let’s keep moving. We’ve long speculated which of the main three stars of TVD — either Nina, Ian Somerhalder (Damon), or Paul Wesley (Stefan) — that was leaving the show after reports surfaced indicating one of them had yet to sign on for the already announced Season 7. After months of speculating, it’s now clear who was holding out and we have to admit we’re a little shocked — especially since Nina has played the show’s main protagonist ever since the pilot back in 2009.

That being said, Julie has spoken before about how she plans to continue the series without one of the main characters saying “every year presents a new challenge” and that much of the creative team’s struggle in Season 6 — which, if you ask us, is one of the best seasons the show has ever turned out — was to keep things “fresh.” As for how she feels about moving forward sans a pivotal character? She says it’s “sad, nostalgic, scary, and yet super stimulating.” We totally get it, Julie.

Now that Nina has spilled the beans and we have to wait until her interview in June’s issue of SELF, we will keep speculating about how Elena’s story will come to an end at the end of this season — which is only 5 episodes away, BTW! — and start remembering her best moments.

We sincerely hope the door will be left for Nina to reprise her role as Elena before the curtains close on Mystic Falls forever and can’t wait to see what she’s got planned next!

Will you watch The Vampire Diaries without Nina? How do you think they’ll end Elena’s story? What will be the status of Delena? Hit the comments and sound off!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
