Terrence Howard’s Ex-Wife Files to Dismiss Assault, Defamation Lawsuit (UPDATE)

UPDATE (1/13/2017 at 5:30 p.m. ET):

Terrence Howard’s alarming legal nightmare is over.

The Empire star’s ex-wife Michelle Ghent has dropped her 2015 defamation and assault lawsuit against him for one big rumored reason: money.

Michelle filed to dismiss the lengthy lawsuit on Friday, January 6, after nearly two years in court.

While many would believe Terrence, 47, paid his ex a huge settlement, that’s reportedly not what happened.

Lawyers fees for both Michelle and her TV star ex “got astronomical” so the former celebrity wife “decided to walk away from the legal fight,” an insider tells TMZ.

However, the woman’s lawyer has a different story to tell.

Michelle’s attorney claims his client didn’t want their shared children dragged into court over the case, which alleges Lucius Lyon’s portrayer attacked his wife during a Costa Rican vacation.

Keep reading for the original details of the shocking lawsuit.

Original story (7/29/2015 at 4:00 p.m. ET):

Forget TV lawyersEmpire star Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon) is now facing a real-life lawsuit from his ex-wife, who alleges the actor assaulted her in 2013.

The Hollywood Reporter reports Terrence's second wife, Michelle Howard, filed a civil lawsuit against him yesterday, July 28, in Los Angeles. According to court docs, Terrence attacked her while they were staying in a rental house in Costa Rica on July 29, 2013. The complaint says he "followed [Michelle] into the restroom of the rental house and punched her on the left side of her face. [Terrence] also grabbed Plaintiff by her neck and pushed her against the bathroom wall and strangled her for several seconds."

Michelle's further claims Terrence defamed her by spreading what she calls false reports she had sent him death threats via social media.

Michelle is Howard's second wife; they married in January 2010, filed for divorce in 2011, and their divorce became final in May 2013. This is not the first time Michelle has accused Terrence of domestic abuse. Her divorce filing was full of disturbing allegations. She is not the only woman to accuse Terrence of violence.

So far, Terrence has not commented on this latest lawsuit.
