T.I. Says Black Hollywood Should Establish an African-American Oscars
Though the Academy Awards aired this past Sunday, February 28, the #OscarsSoWhite debate is continuing the conversation on diversity in the industry.
Several celebrities have voiced their opinions on the matter following Jada Pinkett-Smith’s call for a boycott, wherein the actress also asked Hollywood’s people of color to seek validation from their own communities. And it seems rapper T.I. feels the same way.
The Ant-Man star revealed he felt that it was time for Black Hollywood to establish their own version of the Academy Awards.
“I feel that they are absolutely correct in all their claims that the Oscars are so white that they disregard the contributions of African-Americans or minority talent," the Takers actor said during a #TheStreetsIzWatchin radio segment. "I also feel that the Oscars cater to a very middle America, upper-echelon, sophisticated, who's-who of old muthaf—kas in Hollywood.”
The “Whatever You Like” emcee continued to ask, "Why in the f—k are we still looking to them to validate us?”
He continued,“F—k them. If they don't see what we see, if they don't recognize ours then we can go ahead and start our own s—t man. Will, Jada, muthaf—kin Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, y'all put back $10 million apiece and start a muthafuckin award show that caters to us.”
Whether there will be such an award show in the future is left to be seen. However, with the outcry this year’s nominations have caused, we’re optimistic we can expect some sort of change from the award show in the years to come.
