These days, former Bachelorette Trista Sutter and husband Ryan have pretty much the perfect family, which includes their adorable kids, daughter Blakesley, 5, and son Max (just look at how big they’re getting!). Not to mention, the pair just celebrated their 11-year wedding anniversary a couple months back! But things weren’t always smooth sailing for the Sutters…

Trista, who opened up her relationship with her hubby on Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars last year, recently celebrated the paperback release of her memoir Happily Ever After: The Life-Changing Power of a Grateful Heart. The eye-opening read touches on a lot, including her “dark times” prior to having a family.

“I talk about in the book how we struggled with infertility for almost two years,” the Season 1 lead relayed to Fox News this week. “I always wanted to be a mom, it was always my dream and although I wanted to be a career person for a very long time, overplaying that at all times was to become a mother.”

Sadly, motherhood didn’t come as quickly as the reality star had hoped, following her and Ryan’s big televised wedding in 2003.

“When you get married you believe, ‘OK, the next natural thing is to have babies,’” Trista explained. “When that doesn’t happen you start to question your relationship, you start to question yourself, even God. It’s a very difficult thing to not be able to do anything about making a dream of yours come true and questioning whether something is wrong with you. So that was definitely a dark time in my life.”

The 42-year-old mother of two doesn’t just explore her personal struggles in the book. “I talk about the dark times in my mom’s life,” Trista shared. “She was date raped and she ended up getting pregnant and giving the baby up for adoption because she was raised in a very strict Catholic home and didn’t even tell her parents about it. And forty years later she got a phone call, she reveals.

Trista says she’s since met her sister. “Cathy is her name, and she is part of our family now as we’ve always wanted her to be.”

Sounds like one strong family! Glad to see they’re all doing well now, and that Trista got the sweet family she deserved.
