Tyra Banks on Her Modeling Past: “The Weight Thing Took a Toll on Me”
Tyra Banks is one busy woman!
Though she was OK leaving ANTM after 12 years, the former Victoria’s Secret Model is ready to step in front of the camera again.
Rita Ora took over the hosting duties for Season 23 because the mother of one wanted to focus on her business.
“I would love to say it was my son, but its not. For me, it was about sustainability; about being a business woman, and a boss,” she said according to theJasmineBRAND.
“Then, looking at my brand and saying, ‘Okay, I’ve been doing this a long time. What can I infuse – new – to keep it going for 24 more cycles?’”
She continued, “So, it was more of a business decision as to why I left, and why I came back.”
Despite being one of the most famous models in the industry, Tyra was often criticized for her weight and was told she couldn’t get jobs because of her race.
“The weight thing took a toll on me. And being told that I was black and couldn’t get jobs, and be on the cover of this magazine,” she shared.
“That’s the stuff that hurt, which is why I created [America’s Next] Top Model.”
Though it was hard being criticized, the 44-year-old worked her behind off to prove everybody wrong.
“When I was in my early 20s, I heard I was too big, and wasn’t going to get hired for fashion shows anymore,” she confessed.
“I called my mom boo-hooing. And my mom gave me the talk of life, and snapped me out of it.”
Though she’s taken time off to raise her 2-year-old son York, she’s as busy as ever.
“America’s Got Talent,” she said when asked what’s next for her.
“I’ll be hosting that again. [The movie] Life Size 2, we are hopefully shooting that this summer for a holiday movie at the end of the year.”
We can’t wait to see what you have next, Tyra!
